If you use computers at all, at some point or another, you’ll experience the loss of data Whether your data recovery only has to deal with a few missing files, or whether your entire hard drive is inaccessible, it is important to have a contingency plan in case the worst happens. In today’s tech-savvy world, data recovery is an important service and there are many options that are available to you.

Essentially data recovery is the restoration of data from damaged, corrupted or otherwise inaccessible primary storage media. Most commonly, data is recovered from hard disk or from storage like CDs or DVDs. The storage unit itself might have been physically damaged, some carelessness might have deleted the data, or there might have been some damage done to the application in question. Data recovery today is very sophisticated and can even performed on devices like iPods and USB drives.

Depending on your situation, you might want to investigate the ins and outs of data recovery sooner rather than later. This is something that is best to consider on a worst case scenario. Think in terms of absolutes; what would happen if suddenly your computer or network were wiped of all of the information on them? What would happen if even the applications are gone? This can be disastrous for a small business, where time and reliability are both important factors. How long would it take you to do restore your data if this happened? Could you do it at all?

There are many data recovery solutions available for even small business. Think about what your needs are and how best to cover them. There is data recovery software that you can purchase if the issue isn’t a physical one. When looking for good data recovery software, try to look for software that has a proven track record or that has been personally recommended to you.

If the problem is physical, you may need to take the unit to a trained professional. The more you can tell them about what happened, though, the better the odds are that they can identify your problem. Write down everything you can remember about the circumstances of the equipment failure, like if you noticed a sudden temperature increase or if you remember any sounds. A good specialist should be able to tell you in relatively short order if your equipment is recoverable.

For data recovery, it is in your best interests to think in terms of worst case scenario. In tis case it is much better to be over-prepared than otherwise.

All the paperwork is gone, old lumbering file cabinets missing from the office, and all your files stored electronically in your computers’ hard drive or on floppy discs or Cds, in your palm pilot or other storage media. But what do you do when your computer crashes, you lose or damage your discs, or maybe all is lost due to a natural disaster such as the overwhelming storm surge caused by Hurricane Katrina?

When your data is damaged or corrupted as the result of a hard drive crash or damaged discs that can?t be read properly, you may be able to recover it with one of many versions of software developed to assist you in retrieving your files. Examples are Ontrack Data Recovery, “GetDataBack” software from Runtime or one of a host of companies offering data recovery software.

Another option is to use a company that specializes in data recovery. Drive Solutions, Inc. is well known for their work in data recovery. You can find them at www.drivesolutions.com. Disk Doctors, Data Recovery Group, and hosts of other companies do great work at recovering data from corrupted and non-working drives.

For scratched Cds, many local computer shops, game shops, and even pawn shops offer resurfacing. You can even buydisc resurfacers at many retailers such as Wal Mart, Target, etc.

The most effective way to deal with lost or corrupted data is to back up all of your files. Keep your backups in a safe location away from your home or office in the case of fire, flood, or theft. There are many companies who offer secure data storage solutions.”Let you fingers do the walking” to browse your yellow pages for local data storage professionals.

A very effective and simple solution is to use one of the on-line backup providers such as www.backuphelp.com, www.globaldrive.com, www.usdatatrust.com, or www.itiqsolutions.com.
