If your computer has any contact with other computers at all, there are many things that you should be aware of in terms of protecting your data. To protect data that could be very sensitive, you are going to need to be aware of some of the risks that are present whenever you connect your computer to almost anything at all.

Viruses are a great destroyer of data and the thing to remember is that you can get them from almost everywhere. While the majority of people get viruses through downloads and e-mails, you may not realize that you can even get viruses through devices that you’ve plugged into your computer. Ipods and USB drives can carry viruses and they will be just as detrimental as the ones that you get online; often, they’re exactly the same!

To protect data that you need, there are many preventative measures that you can take. Firewalls are your first line of defense in terms of viruses and if possible, it is always better to prevent viruses than to get them out after they’ve done some damage to your data. A firewall can be a piece of software that you run or a router that has firewall capabilities. If you are on a machine that is running a Windows operating system, there is most likely a firewall you can turn on. You can also download a free one from the internet or purchase one along with your anti-virus.

If firewalls are like taking vitamins to make sure you don’t get viruses, anti-viruses are like taking antibiotics after you’ve already gotten sick. You should run your anti-virus regularly, to make sure that there are no quiet viruses that are doing damage in the background. Remember that an anti-virus is only as good as its latest update. You should update your anti-virus regularly and make sure that it is run on a daily basis. If your computer is showing any signs of slowing down or behaving strangely (redirecting you to webpages you’ve never been to, etc) run your scans immediately and if necessary, look up the symptoms online to see if there is a specific removal tool that is necessary.

In the interest of data protection, there is a lot you can do, but keep in mind that in terms of regular usage, a lot of it is in terms of what you don’t do. For instance, don’t open suspicious e-mails. Similarly, don’t download indiscriminately and make sure your source is reputable.

Data protection is something that anyone who is connected to other computers in any way needs to think about and it is definitely something you should consider well before the worst happens.

Whether you’re well-versed in the ins and outs of firewalls or can just barely remember your e-mail password, data security is something that everyone with an internet presence needs to think about. You are protecting your data from unauthorized access and viewing, at worst, you are protecting it from destruction and modification. Especially if you are a small business and have billing information somewhere on your site, data security is of the utmost importance.

You can manage you data security on three levels; depending on your situation, some will be more pertinent than others. At an administrative level, controls are maintained through policy. An example of an administrative control would be governmental laws. At the logical level, control is maintained through passwords and firewalls. At the logical level, an individual has only the permissions needed to do their job, and their passwords reflect this. The physical level of control is the most basic but still very effective. Doors, locks and cameras all fall under physical level of control. Depending on your situation, this could be as easy as locking your office door when you’re not in it, to stationing a security guard at the front door!

In the interests of protecting the data stored on your computer, it is important to think about who or what might be trying to access it. The most obvious answer for most users is hackers, but there are many mundane things that can breach your data security and cause a lot of damage.

Computer viruses can be devastating for a business with an online presence. Through keeping a firewall in operation and running regular anti-virus scans, you can mitigate the risk of viruses. A firewall will prevent you from getting them in the first place, while an anti-virus will help you deal with a virus that is already on your system.

Adware is another concern. While adware and spyware might not create problems for your network, your data security is at risk because they will send information about your internet preferences and activity to advertisers, making you more vulnerable to targeted advertising. This annoyance can become a real issue if your business accounts start getting deluged with spam.

If you’re worried about real-life security issues, like people logging onto your account or profile, there are a few simple tips to keep in mind. Don’t stay permanently logged in to your accounts, and make sure that your password is not easy to guess. Don’t use the same passwords for your accounts. Integrating numbers and letters in your password will also make it more difficult to casually access; one common format used by many businesses is a six letter word followed by a two digit number.

No matter what kind of presence you have online, remember that data security is an important consideration.

If you are an organization that keeps information on computers, protecting that information is not an option any longer. Government legislation now says that any organization that believes there has been a security breach which compromises personal information must be reported.

For example if a hospital does not have secure data protection software and their computers are breached, think of the information that would be compromised. Names, social security numbers, addresses, birthdates, credit card or checking account numbers and many other forms of information that could probably at the very least cause you a big headache. Likewise with public schools, universities, doctor?s offices, and numerous other businesses that have your personal information.

Computrace Data Protection from Absolute is one choice for protecting your computer contents. Not only do they protect your sensitive information and make sure you comply with government laws, but in the event your computer is stolen or breached they can remotely delete data. This is also an excellent way of making sure computers that are being updated with modern computers are clean when they are disposed of. Data Protection Manager from Microsoft is another choice for organizations. Corporations can typically spend billions of dollars a year to recover lost data. With DPM there is a self service user recovery which allows users to recover data. This can save the company not only money but time.

Your personal computer contains a multitude of information especially if you use it for bill management. It also usually contains personal items such as photos or emails that you don?t want to lose. From a virus to a hacker your computer is at risk every time you access the internet. There are an estimated 58,000 viruses in existence. You can be a threat to your computer. Accidentally deleting files or overwriting files can cause loss of information. Home Computer Security is an excellent choice for data backup, data security, and internet threats.

Cable modem and DSL users are at particular risk of internet theft. For a nominal fee they can set up the right system for your needs and protect your computer. An engineer can conduct an on-site evaluation and set up your computer for backups on a schedule that you determine. They also provide training on retrieving data that is backed up. They can daily monitor your backups so you can be assured your information is safe. They also provide off site storage in the event of a fire, flood, or theft. They offer two plans that are quite affordable for the home user. The best thing you can do for your computer and your peace of mind is protect it.

For many people, organizations, health care facilities, and various other businesses, data protection is of the utmost importance. When you collect information about anyone it is your responsibility to make sure it is not compromised and falls into the wrong hands.

For example, banks have a customer’s social security number, birthdate, place of residence, financial information which includes account numbers and credit card numbers. If this information is compromised by a thief, you could literally be wiped out in a matter of minutes. There are people who make their living doing just this.

There are many ways to protect your data and keep it from being abused by someone trying to make money off of your information. If you are a small or large business and handle sensitive information, which just about everyone does, any paperwork that you no longer need can be shredded to make sure it is actually destroyed and not at risk of being viewed by someone with bad intentions.

Information on your computer can be protected by various means. If you back up your information yourself, keep in mind that this process can be quite time consuming especially if you have a lot of data on your computer. You can hire a company to take care of this task and some of the better ones will continuously monitor your computer for risks and back up your information and the information as it changes, thereby making recovery much faster in the event of a problem.

For the personal computer user, who probably has irreplaceable pictures, emails, or ebill information , a good data protection system is a must. Some photos you may have may be the only copy you possess. To lose them would be disastrous. Once they are gone, they are lost irretrievably. From viruses to fraud there are many ways a thief can take advantage. Invest in a protection system that works for you.

Back up your computer files. Last but not least, when you backup your system whether it is the do it yourself back up or you hire a company to do so, choose one that you are comfortable with and has good reviews. If you back up your own system check the discs carefully. Because they sometimes don’t copy everything the way they should and finding out after you need them is means you basically didn?t have data protection.
