Database Software in the Internet Age

A database is any collection of information stored in one location that can easily be accessed for use in a given application. Typical examples of a database are catalogs, employee time sheets, customer information, or any collection of related or unrelated information which may be needed by users for many various purposes.

Suppose you have several employees and each one has a different hourly wage and work differing total hours; your database would contain information on each employee such as their hourly wage rate, their income tax withholding information, deductions for insurance, savings plans, and percentage required for Social Security and Medicare taxes. You enter hours worked for that employee, and your accounting software retrieves the information from the database to calculate the amount due to the employee after all deductions and keeps a running total of year to date wages, taxes, and other withheld amounts. At tax time, your software retrieves the information and issues W-2 forms and you have reports ready to file.

There is a host of companies offering database software for your computer, database systems off site, and many online database storage sites. A few examples follow.
