Whether you have two computers hooked up to your network or ten or even more, network data storage requires careful consideration and decision-making on your part. Whenever you connect computers to each other, you are increasing their vulnerability to things like computer viruses and malware and in a worse case scenario, a good network data storage system will save you both time and money.

It is important to be aware of the risks that are involved when you have a small network computers and then plan for them. One way to think about it is that if one computer gets something like a virus, you can assume that they others probably have it too. Many viruses will scan for other computers on the network that they can infect and this action can take place very quickly after one computer is affected. To ensure the best productivity, most computers on the same network aren’t protected from each other and if the virus is a particularly nasty one, all the machines can be down in a space of hours, even minutes. Sometimes, dangers to the network are more mundane; a lightning strike might have damaged the router and caused damage to some of the computers connected to it.

The fact remains that damage to a network can occur very quickly and unexpectedly. In light of happenings like this, it is important to prepare some method of network data storage that will get your network back on its feet and running again in as little time as possible.

One thing you can do is make sure that your network computers are backed up is to make sure that you have a backup server. Many of these devices use rewritable CDs or DVDs to transfer the backups to the server. This is a great solution for those who want to make sure that they are the only ones that have access to their files. The drawback is that in the case of a power outage, the backup server might have been damaged too.

When looking into network data storage, you will also want to consider an online service storage. This can be one of the most convenient options available; many networks are already connected to the internet, and doing uploads on a nightly basis can be quite easy. In terms of convenience and automatic service, an online storage option might be ideal. Also keep in mind that you are subject to the storage services policies and in the event of the business going under or being hacked, your data is also at risk.

When your network data storage is in question, you will need to act quickly. Make sure that you know what you need and what you can do to meet those needs!

Whether you’re well-versed in the ins and outs of firewalls or can just barely remember your e-mail password, data security is something that everyone with an internet presence needs to think about. You are protecting your data from unauthorized access and viewing, at worst, you are protecting it from destruction and modification. Especially if you are a small business and have billing information somewhere on your site, data security is of the utmost importance.

You can manage you data security on three levels; depending on your situation, some will be more pertinent than others. At an administrative level, controls are maintained through policy. An example of an administrative control would be governmental laws. At the logical level, control is maintained through passwords and firewalls. At the logical level, an individual has only the permissions needed to do their job, and their passwords reflect this. The physical level of control is the most basic but still very effective. Doors, locks and cameras all fall under physical level of control. Depending on your situation, this could be as easy as locking your office door when you’re not in it, to stationing a security guard at the front door!

In the interests of protecting the data stored on your computer, it is important to think about who or what might be trying to access it. The most obvious answer for most users is hackers, but there are many mundane things that can breach your data security and cause a lot of damage.

Computer viruses can be devastating for a business with an online presence. Through keeping a firewall in operation and running regular anti-virus scans, you can mitigate the risk of viruses. A firewall will prevent you from getting them in the first place, while an anti-virus will help you deal with a virus that is already on your system.

Adware is another concern. While adware and spyware might not create problems for your network, your data security is at risk because they will send information about your internet preferences and activity to advertisers, making you more vulnerable to targeted advertising. This annoyance can become a real issue if your business accounts start getting deluged with spam.

If you’re worried about real-life security issues, like people logging onto your account or profile, there are a few simple tips to keep in mind. Don’t stay permanently logged in to your accounts, and make sure that your password is not easy to guess. Don’t use the same passwords for your accounts. Integrating numbers and letters in your password will also make it more difficult to casually access; one common format used by many businesses is a six letter word followed by a two digit number.

No matter what kind of presence you have online, remember that data security is an important consideration.
